New Promotion Service from Penweb

It's fairly straightforward for you to pay LookSmart a one-time fee of $149 if you know what you're doing. But if you make an error it can be a waste of money. It's a little easier to get your site listed well at Yahoo! if you know how to read your title and description tags, but they now charge $299 for the privilege.

If you want to be added to LookSmart or Yahoo! I'll just charge for my time and expenses to optimize your listing and get it accepted. But if you want to really stay at the top of the rankings you should consider Penweb's new Managed Promotion Account.

On the other hand, probably the most cost-effective (minimum $45/month) way to get results in the search engines is a lot more complicated. I don't recommend bidding for search terms at Overture.com yourself. It takes some research and an understanding of how their system works. If you study it at length and research your terms you might be able to get good results, but it may be a better use of your time to have me do it for you.

In a nutshell, with Overture you bid on search terms that are related to the main purpose of your site. You only pay the bid price (minimum $.05) when someone clicks on your displayed URL and goes to your site. It's like placing an ad at the top of 5 search engines that only appears when someone uses the search terms on which you've bid, and you only have to pay for the ad if they click on your site address.

It's only the top 3 bids, now only 2 on some engines, for a given search term that will get your site to the front page of the 6 search engines (Yahoo!, Excite (and InfoSpace), AOL, AltaVista, Lycos and Netscape) other than Overture's own. This is targeted marketing at the price of mass marketing. We can bid on as many search terms as wanted, but they are reviewed by humans and my experience suggests that Overture's pretty careful about enforcing their policy that the terms relate to the site content.

How you enter the info on their form is crucial. The first time I submitted a site some terms were accepted and some weren't. It wasn't as simple as it first appeared. It took me 3 web site submissions to get it right and start getting maximum placement at minimum cost for the chosen search terms. At this point I'm getting some very good returns. As I said, I don't recommend you try this yourself.

The Managed Promotion Acct. is for those of you who want the maximum bang for minimum bucks without spending the time necessary to learn how to do it properly yourselves. Whether you're already listed in Yahoo! and/or LookSmart or not this is a way to use Overture to place your site on the top of the first page of results in 7 of the biggest search engines.

For $25/month, in addition to the monthly charges from Overture, Penweb will make sure your site is ranked in the top 3 for as many of your chosen search terms as possible. Twice monthly I'll check your rankings at Overture and see how close to your target monthly cost limit (minimum $20) your site is, then adjust your bid on search terms up or down for maximum effectiveness within your budget. An email report will also be sent to you if necessary for you to make a decision about your cost limit.

I'm already doing this for 4 clients. Three have noticed a definite increase in contacts. The other was getting online sales from his brand new site in just a few days. He's now approaching one online sale a day after some adjustments to his search term bids. He's quite happy with the results from a web site only 2 months old.

Another client had Penweb create a new site recently and he didn't want to pay for this type of promo. He has yet to get an order though his site has been up for 4 months. Please let me know if you'd like to open a Managed Promotion Acct. or get your site listed in LookSmart or Yahoo!
