Mobile Web SitesMost of the customers who use the web for buying or learning about products are also cell phone users. Most cell phones have the capability to use a mobile browser to access the web. So far, a small percentage of these customers are using their phones in this way, but that should change quickly during 2007. As cellular connection speeds increase, more people will start using them to access the web anywhere, anytime. There are some important differences, however, both in the way mobile sites need to be created and the way the customer uses them. Sites must be designed for small screens, not the newer, big flat panels. And they must be able to download very quickly, since connection speeds lag far behind those of land lines and wi-fi. While there are customers who have a PDA or smart phone with a larger screen and the ability to run Windows Mobile, most people still have regular cell phones.
Several standards have been created for mobile sites, but one in particular has been chosen by the WW3 to be used for handheld devices in general, not just cell phones. Penweb has adopted this standard for the mobile sites it creates, so that anyone on any device, including a PC, can access the sites. Not all of my clients need mobile sites. I doubt anyone will buy a piece of artwork or laundry detergent on their phone, but service providers such as the real estate and transportation industries can reach their customers anywhere, anytime. If you'd like to discuss your mobile site needs, please contact me and we can discuss the options. For examples of Penweb's mobile sites, start at Sequim.Mobi. Back |
